From your first design to a finished transparent PNG, one step at a time. Best for A4, A3 and half metre sheets.

Transparent PNG downloads need Canva Pro (or Teams, Education or Nonprofits). On Canva Free the background downloads white, and white prints. If youโ€™re on Free, design in Canva, then ask us before you order.

Set up a page at your sheet size

Open our template, or make the page yourself. Either way the page is the sheet, so its size must match the sheet you order.

  1. Create a design โ†’ Custom size

    On the Canva home page click Create a design โ†’ Custom size. Change the units from px to cm.

  2. Type the sheet size

    Half metre: 58 ร— 50 cm. A4: 21 ร— 29.7 cm. A3: 29.7 ร— 42 cm. 1 metre: enter 100 ร— 58 cm (landscape, see the note).

  3. Or open our template

    Use the size picker on this page to open the matching template, then File โ†’ Make a copy so you keep the original.

  4. Leave the page plain

    Donโ€™t pick a background colour or a template with a coloured page. Anything on the page prints, including white.

1 metre sheets in Canva: a Canva page can be up to 8000 px wide but only 3125 px tall, so set the metre sheet up as 100 ร— 58 cm (sideways). Download at the largest size and rotate the PNG if you like; we can print it either way.

Add your artwork

Upload the designs you want printed. Use your own artwork, or artwork you have permission to print.

  1. Upload your files

    Uploads โ†’ Upload files. PNGs with transparent backgrounds are ideal. JPGs always have a solid background, so avoid them unless youโ€™ll remove it.

  2. Remove any background

    Select the image โ†’ Edit image โ†’ Background remover (Canva Pro). Check the edges afterwards; hair, shadows and soft edges often need tidying.

  3. Use big files

    Canva canโ€™t add detail. A 500 px logo will print blurry at 25 cm. Try the sharpness check if youโ€™re unsure.

  4. Text and shapes are fine

    Anything you make in Canva itself (text, shapes, Canva graphics youโ€™re licensed to use) exports crisp at any size.

Size, duplicate and arrange

Set each design to its real print size, make copies, and leave room to cut between them.

  1. Set the real print size

    Select a design and open Position (or the size box on the toolbar). With the proportions locked, type the width in cm, for example 25 for a front print or 9 for a left chest.

  2. Duplicate

    Ctrl / Cmd + D makes a copy at the same size. Make as many as you need.

  3. Leave 1 cm between designs

    Turn on rulers and guides (File โ†’ View settings) to keep gaps even. Keep 5 mm from the page edge.

  4. Stay inside the page

    Anything past the edge is cropped. Canva shows the page border, so keep every design fully inside it.

Download a transparent PNG

This is the step that matters most. The background must be transparent, and the size slider should be at its highest.

  1. Share โ†’ Download

    Top right, click Share, then Download.

  2. File type: PNG

    Not JPG (no transparency) and not PDF.

  3. Turn on Transparent background

    The tick box under the file type. This needs Canva Pro. If you canโ€™t see it, your plan doesnโ€™t include it.

  4. Size slider all the way up

    Drag the Size ร— slider to the right (up to 3.125ร—). Thatโ€™s what gives you 300 DPI at the printed size.

  5. Download the whole page

    Donโ€™t crop or select one design. We need the full sheet exactly as you laid it out.

Check the downloaded file

Thirty seconds now saves a reprint later. Open the PNG on your computer, not in Canva.

  1. Open the PNG

    Look for a checkerboard or dark grey behind the artwork. A plain white background means transparency wasnโ€™t on.

  2. Check the pixel size

    Right-click โ†’ Properties (Windows) or Get Info (Mac). A half metre sheet should be about 6850 ร— 5906 px; a 1 metre sheet about 11811 ร— 6850 px.

  3. Zoom in

    At 100% the edges should be crisp. Fuzzy edges mean the source image was too small.

  4. Read it once more

    Spelling, the right number of each design, nothing mirrored, no leftover guides or template notes.
